The following candidates for City Council in the 2024 Don Valley West by-election have taken the RaBIT pledge to support ranked ballots:
Rachel Chernos Lin has taken the pledge
Sam Robinson has taken the pledge
"With many candidates often running for city council seats it is not unusual for someone to get elected with a very small proportion of the votes. And given typical voter turnout is often in the 30% range this means elections can be won with the support of a very very small percentage of electors. Ranked ballets could help alleviate this situation."
Evan Sambasivam has taken the pledge
- Due to concerns over vote splitting, Evan Sambasivam has suspended his campaign.
"Voters should be able to vote with their conscience. First past the post favours incumbents and status quo candidates, while depressing turnout for new voices and ideas that better reflect the community. Some candidates even employ the threat of vote splitting in a cynical attempt to push down progression voices. Our electoral system should encourage voters to elect candidates that reflect their values, and ranked ballots would better enable that."
- During the 2022 Toronto Election Campaign, Evan Sambasivam took the RaBIT Candidate Pledge
Sheena Sharpe has taken the pledge
"Ranked Ballot would be positive for Toronto because it would ensure that most people are satisfied with the winner, and it would reduce the effectiveness of demonization and other negative campaign strategies."
- During the 2022 Toronto Election Campaign, Sheena Sharpe took the RaBIT Candidate Pledge
Shakhlo Sharipova has taken the pledge
"In traditional systems, voters sometimes feel pressured to vote strategically for a candidate they think can win, even if that candidate isn’t their top choice. Ranked ballots reduce the need for this, allowing voters to rank candidates according to their true preferences. It opens the door for more diverse candidates to have a chance, as voters can support them without the fear of "wasting" their vote. Candidates are incentivized to appeal not only to their base but also to supporters of other candidates for second-choice or third-choice votes. This can lead to more positive, issues-based campaigns and reduce the negativity and polarization often seen in regular elections."
Jason Stevens has taken the pledge
"It may make the correlation between the public's preference and the resulting representation more reflective of a quality desire of honourable governance."
Lesley Stoyan has taken the pledge
"Ranked ballots offer several advantages. They give voters greater choice by allowing them to rank multiple candidates, helping to reduce the influence of "spoiler" candidates, and minimizing the chances of a candidate winning without a true majority. This system also eliminates "tactical voting," enabling voters to honestly rank their preferences without fear of wasting their votes. Overall, ranked ballots can create a more democratic and inclusive electoral process—something I had to advocate for in this election when I was excluded from the first virtual debate!"
Daniel Trayes has taken the pledge
"This is my 4th run for City Councillor. I've always taken the pledge when asked to. I believe equal opportunities should be granted for people to be able to showcase their knowledge & talents in the community, for the community."
