Well that was short!

It was less than a month ago that Doug Ford launched us into the election campaign that ends tomorrow, on Thursday, 27 February. In fact, this was the shortest election campaign allowed by Ontario law and the first to be held during the winter in over 100 years!

Despite the challenges that this unusual campaign has created, it hasn’t stopped RaBIT from contacting hundreds of candidates for provincial parliament from across the province to ask them the following simple question:

“As a candidate in the 2025 Ontario Provincial Election, will you pledge that, if elected, you will support, advance, and vote in favour of those actions required for Ontario municipalities to have the option of using ranked ballots for their municipal elections."

We’ve been elated with the response we’ve received: more than 56 candidates (and counting) have taken the pledge. This includes candidates from every region of Ontario. It includes Greens, Liberals, and New Democrats, clearly demonstrating that voting reform, restoring local choice, and fortifying our democracy transcends partisan politics.

We run these candidate pledge campaigns because we want to make sure that you, the voters, have this important piece of information to inform your decision when you make your way to the ballot box. So please take a moment to visit our pledge tracker and check to see which candidates in your riding are standing up for democracy.

We also organize these pledge campaigns to make sure that the parties recognize that voting reform and building up our democracy remain key issues for Ontarians. And we are getting results: we are happy to report that the Green Party of Ontario included a commitment to give Ontario municipalities the option of using ranked ballots for their elections right in their party platform.

None of this would have been possible without your support. So thank you very much. But there’s still time for one final push, so here’s how you can help as we dash towards the finish line:

  1. Visit our webpage to see if your local candidate has taken the pledge yet
  2. If they haven’t, call or email them to ask them to respond to us (they’ll most likely have an email in their inbox from us already!) or message them on social media
  3. Amplify our pledge campaign on social media by engaging with our posts

Whatever the result tomorrow, we’ll keep fighting to advance this important cause. We hope we can count on your continued support as we do so.
