During the 2022 Ontario provincial election, we reached out to all of the major political parties to secure their commitiment to restoring municipalities' choice to use ranked ballots, if they were to form government. We received the following responses:

Green Party of Ontario

The Green Party of Ontario included in its election platform a commitment to return to municipalities the ability to use ranked ballots for their own elections.

"Allow municipalities the option to use a ranked ballot voting system for elections." (Page 43)

Liberal Party of Ontario

The Liberal Party of Ontario included in its election platform a commitment to return to municipalities the ability to use ranked ballots for their own elections.

"Ontario Liberals will:

...

We’ll broaden Elections Ontario’s mandate to help municipalities implement ranked ballots if they choose." (Page 81)

New Democratic Party

While the NDP did not include mention of ranked ballots for municipalities in their election platform, the leader of the party, Andrea Horwath, publicly committed to returning to municipalities the ability to use ranked ballots for their own elections.

"I'm committed to bringing back the right of municipalities to decide how to hold their own elections —including ranked ballots."

Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario

The PC Party passed Bill 218 which revoked municipalities ability to use ranked ballots for their own elections. The PCs did not publish an election platform and declined multiple requests from RaBIT to provide an indication of their future plans with regards to ranked ballots and municipal elections.
