As part of the 2026 Toronto Municipal Election, the City of Toronto is inviting kids to mark their own ballots and vote for the 2027 Toronto Tree of the Year. Voting will take place on Kids Vote Weekend, October 10 and 11, and the City will announce the results after Election Day on October 26. Then, in 2027 the City will plan 1,000 of the winning tree across Toronto

But we thought, what if we used ranked ballots? Would the results be different? Let's find out! 

We're not going to plant 1,000 trees in 2027 — we're a voting reform group, after all — but we'll compare results with the kids' votes and see if we'd get a different winner with a different voting method. 

From the City's website: "The Basswood, Paper Birch, Red Oak, Sugar Maple and White Pine were selected as candidates for Toronto’s 2027 Tree of the Year, because they are large trees native to Toronto that play an important role in our urban forest. These trees are found throughout Toronto’s green spaces, parks and streets."
