"Ranked Ballots at the municipal level are a critical tool to ensure that voters feel comfortable in voting for a variety of candidates, even if polling shows that their preferred candidate may fall short of winning the election. Under First Past the Post, electors feel backed into the corner where they are voting for the least objectionable candidate, rather than who they truly support. Municipalities clearly recognize this, and the provincial government is overreaching far beyond its mandate by strong-arming municipalities to continue with an unpopular system."
